VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN DIETS
Two of the most common mental health disorders worldwide are depression and anxiety. One of the factors that could be linked to the onset of these two conditions is diet.
Due to the absence of animal-derived products, vegetarian or vegan diets carry a higher risk of certain nutritional deficiencies. They have been shown to provide low amounts of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, and zinc. In addition, although the iron intake of vegetarian diets tends to be fairly similar to that of non-vegetarian diets, the bioavailability of iron from vegetarian diets is lower due to the absence of heme iron. Vegan diets, meanwhile, also show lower blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), as well as a lower intake of vitamin B12 and calcium compared to people who include meat in their diet.
A study concluded that a pattern of abstaining from meat consumption is clearly associated with poorer mental health, specifically with higher levels of depression and anxiety.
The link between depression and vegetarianism appears to be related to a reduced intake of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, folate, iron, or zinc. Another potential factor could be elevated levels of phytoestrogens, as well as higher levels of pesticide metabolites, resulting from increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and soy.

ANIMAL PROTEIN VS PLANT PROTEIN
There is currently a new trend of alternatives to animal-based proteins. These are products made from plant-based proteins, mainly in the form of burgers and other typically meat-like formats. Some consumers may tend to believe that these products, being plant-based and backed by aggressive marketing, may be healthier than meat, when in fact they are not.
There are various sources of protein: animal and plant. Animal proteins contain all the essential amino acids (which make up proteins) that our body needs, whereas plant proteins, such as peas, pulses, soy, wheat, etc., do not provide them in full. These plant protein sources are deficient in some essential amino acids of high biological value, such as histidine and lysine.
In addition, animal proteins are highly bioavailable, which means we can absorb these nutrients and meet the body’s needs—something that does not happen with plant proteins, as their bioavailability is lower, meaning that even if amino acids are present, the body cannot absorb them properly.
And let us not forget that, in addition to high-biological-value proteins, meat provides vitamins such as B vitamins, especially vitamin B12, which is only found in animal products, and minerals such as iron and zinc, among others, with high bioavailability.
What other ingredients can we find in plant-based products?
The fats in plant-based analogues usually come mainly from oils such as rapeseed, coconut, or sunflower. In addition, these products are often highly processed, with a long list of ingredients in their effort to achieve the texture, appearance, and flavour of real meat, and they tend to be high in salt.

Pig sector in Spain
Spain’s pig sector is of key importance to our country’s economy, as it accounts for around 14% of Final Agricultural Production. Within livestock production, the pig sector ranks first in terms of economic importance, reaching close to 39% of Final Livestock Production.
Globally, the EU-28 is the second-largest producer of pork, after China. Individually, Spain is the fourth-largest producing power (after China, the USA, and Germany), while, at European level, Spain ranks second in production with 19% of the tonnes produced (2018 data, Source: EUROSTAT and SG Analysis, Coordination and Statistics, MAPA), behind Germany, and is the EU’s leading country by herd size, with close to 21% of the Community herd (2018 data, Source: EUROSTAT and SG Analysis, Coordination and Statistics, MAPA).
