weRfoods Joins Oncotrail for a Good Cause

At weRfoods, we are very excited to be part of this year’s Oncotrail, a charity initiative promoted by the Fundació Oncolliga Girona, which aims to raise funds to support people with cancer and their families.

The Oncotrail is much more than a sporting challenge. It is an initiative that unites teams, companies, and individuals around a common cause, demonstrating that collective effort can contribute to generating a positive impact on society.

For the weRfoods team, participating in this challenge means taking on an endeavor that combines effort, camaraderie, and solidarity. There will be many kilometers, many hours, and moments of exertion, but also an opportunity to share an experience as a team and contribute to a cause that matters to us.

Committed to People and Our Environment

At weRfoods, we believe in the value of people, the strength of teams, and the importance of maintaining an active commitment to our environment and society.

Our participation in the Oncotrail is part of this understanding of our social commitment: to combine efforts, work together, and contribute our bit wherever we can make a difference.

Because every kilometer counts. And when it is covered as a team and for a good cause, every step is worthwhile.

At weRfoods, we face this challenge with great enthusiasm and the motivation to enjoy the journey together, supporting an initiative that puts people at its center.

Kilometer by kilometer, we unite efforts for a good cause.

Even our youngest ones help us put safety at the heart of everything

At weRfoods, we believe that safety and workplace well-being are part of how we care for people. That is why we also wanted to involve the youngest members of our families in an initiative designed to bring them, in a creative and fun way, closer to the importance of safety in the workplace.

With this aim, we organised a drawing competition for the sons and daughters of our employees, inviting them to show through their own drawings what safety and well-being at work mean to them.

The initiative allowed us to discover different perspectives on a topic that is part of our everyday lives. Through their drawings, the children were able to express, through their imagination and creativity, how they understand the importance of working in a safe and healthy environment.

A keepsake created by them

In recognition of their participation, we wanted to go one step further and turn each of the drawings we received into a personalised fabric backpack.

In this way, each participant received a unique and special keepsake, created from their own idea. A way to thank them for their involvement and, at the same time, ensure that the message of safety stays with them outside the workplace as well.

This initiative reflects our commitment to a culture in which safety and well-being are at the heart, as well as to a company that wants to involve its people and their families in what forms part of our values.

At weRfoods, we would like to thank all the children who took part, and our people, for making initiatives like this possible.

Because caring for people also means sharing our values with those who are part of their lives.

Friselva reinforces its commitment to sustainability through the use of solar energy

At Friselva, we believe that sustainability is a way to move forward and build the future of the food industry. For this reason, we continue to promote initiatives that allow us to develop an activity that is increasingly efficient, responsible, and environmentally friendly.

One of these initiatives is the installation of more than 6,000 m² of solar panels at our facilities, a commitment to renewable energy that contributes to reducing our environmental footprint and moving towards a more sustainable energy model.

This project is part of our strategy to integrate solutions that improve the efficiency of our processes and favor a more responsible use of resources, while always maintaining our commitment to quality, innovation, and respect for the environment.

At Friselva, we understand that every action counts. Therefore, we continue working to promote sustainable growth that generates a positive impact on both the environment and future generations.

HYDROLESS PROJECT

Reducing water consumption in production plants through the use of artificial intelligence and digital twins (Hydroless)

Description

Friselva, together with Corporación Alimentaria Guissona (bonÀrea) and with the participation of the UPC’s inLab FIB as a technology center, is working on the Hydroless operational group project.

The current situation of the meat industry sector is characterized by several challenges, including pressure on water resources and its impact on environmental sustainability, among others. Water consumption at meat industry facilities is high, largely due to the characteristics of the current production system. However, the industry itself is the first to be interested in significantly reducing this consumption, but it needs efficient tools to make this possible, such as digital twins and artificial intelligence.

The project sets out two main objectives:

– On one hand, a solution will be developed to monitor and optimize water consumption used during the production process at bonÀrea’s plant in Guissona;

– On the other hand, a digital twin of Friselva’s facilities in the town of Riudellots de la Selva will be designed and developed, enabling the monitoring and study of design alternatives for the optimization and recirculation of water used in the various processing rooms included in the digitized plant, in order to optimize water consumption.

Projects supported by DARPA – Operational Groups 2023

Project name: “ALTEMO: Feeding early-stage piglets with Tenebrio molitor larvae: effects on intestinal development and health”

Participants: NOEL ALIMENTARIA SAU (leader), SELECCIÓN BATALLÉ SA (beneficiary), FRISELVA SA (beneficiary), INNOVACC (coordinator), IRTA (OPI), Iberinsect (contractor).

Budget: €82,986.87

Grant: €67,238.97

Project summary:

Animal plasma is a by-product of slaughterhouses, traditionally derived from pig blood or a mixture of bovine and porcine blood. Currently, in Europe, plasma used for animal feed must come exclusively from non-ruminant animals and be produced in authorized facilities. This protein source, rich in albumins and globulins, stands out for its high digestibility and high biological value, making it especially useful in the feeding of newly weaned piglets. Plasma helps improve intestinal health and animal productivity thanks to its protective properties, possibly due to its content of active immunoglobulins.

The dietary transition in piglets is a critical process, marked by stress and the challenges of adapting to a solid diet. At this stage, the use of feed containing small proportions of plasma (2-6%) helps reduce weaning complications, improving intake and digestion and lowering mortality rates. However, the high cost of plasma limits its use.

For this reason, the ALTEMO project proposes more sustainable and cost-effective alternatives, such as the inclusion of insect protein in pre-starter feeds, as an innovative solution. The main objective is to provide evidence on how replacing plasma protein with Tenebrio molitor protein affects the development and intestinal health of piglets, while also improving the sustainability of the system. This alternative is presented as a viable option to reduce dependence on traditional sources such as plasma and soy, while ensuring a nutritious, high-quality product.

In addition, the project aims to address the European Union’s social demands regarding food sustainability and animal welfare. Implementing this innovation would help reduce food waste, offer more sustainable solutions, and help combat antimicrobial resistance, meeting the requirements of intensive production in the livestock sector.

SDGs – COMPANIES WITH A SOUL

Last week, FRISELVA attended Comertia’s ‘Companies with a Soul’ event, which explored the path towards a new business paradigm, advocating for companies to be viewed as positive contributors and for tax policies to be designed with this perception in mind.

Public administrations should strive to understand businesses while streamlining their operations and formulating tax policies that acknowledge the business sector as a crucial economic contributor. These are some of the demands put forth by retail representatives at a Comertia meeting focused on ‘Companies with a Soul’. The association’s 21st Retail Event featured presentations by business leaders such as Joan Font (Bon Preu) and Anna Sorli (Sorli), Olympic medalist Ona Carbonell, innovation expert Alfons Cornella, and physician and essayist Mario Alonso Puig.
